Hey there families! I hope your week has gone smoothly and happily! 😊 The children are a little wiggly and they can tell our Thanksgiving Break is around the corner! They are practicing for the play next Thursday and cannot wait to have you attend!!! If you could please do me a favor and respond to this email and let me know how many in your family will be coming. Younger siblings (not Dolvin students) are allowed to come. They will most likely need to sit on your lap. Just so you know the whole performance is actually pretty quick but super cute!!!
Thanks to our Mystery Reader, Amit Guenther (Liam’s mom). The children love to be read to! I forgot to mention that last week the children helped scoop pumpkin seeds from our pumpkin, which we call, “Pumpkin Jack”. They also got to try real pumpkin seeds (store-bought of course!) and they really liked them! After we were done we put Pumpkin Jack out in the garden to slowly rot away, just like in our book called Pumpkin Jack. It will been fun watching it slowly rot…through the seasons.

We are wrapping up our counting unit and the children have done a great job!
We noticed a lot of coughing this week and very runny noses. If your child is not feeling well, please be sure to keep them at home. I know it is tough this time of year. We are practicing our Thanksgiving play and the children are excited to have you come to watch it. 😊 We have been learning about the sun and moon; writing about given topics by writing full sentences and tapping out the sounds in the words, and adding details to our pictures; talking about ways to Breathe in and Breathe out and stay calm when we are mad during our SEL lessons; reading decodable and cvc word sentences like champs; making clay pots in Art; and winning another super star in Music…hooray!; and practicing for our upcoming Thanksgiving Play!!

Happy weekend parents! Our little hive was buzzing with activity this week. We had a counseling lesson with Mrs. Fisher on Monday; made and delivered notes to our bus drivers to show our appreciation; counted and collected more socks (our total was close to 175 pairs for our class!!); wrote a book review for the school bulletin board (we loved Scaredy Squirrel!) ; enjoyed our Mystery readers Mr. and Mrs. Tullio (Magnolia's parents) and Mr. Allen last week (William's dad); practiced counting by 10s and backwards from 10; learned about Christopher Columbus; during Writer’s Workshop wrote about pumpkins (informational), and wrote about our favorite parts of a fiction book; continued to blend words and even some with beginning blends (fr, tr, pr, etc); played outside in the chilly weather and practiced zipping up our own coats; enjoyed the 5oth day with some dancing to Elvis, watching a funny chocolate video with Lucille Ball, and ending with a delicious Coke float!! Boy, it’s great to be in Kindergarten!! 😊
As we get into the second quarter of school, the children are getting more comfortable with their peers and sometimes a little frustrated. I have been speaking to them about patience, being flexible, keeping their hands to themselves, and problem solving first by using their words. I remind them to try to work it out 2 times and then they can come to me and I will mediate as they talk with their friend about their problem. I do not listen to “tattles”. 😊 It works! They realize as they get older they will continue to need to problem solve. Thanks for your support!

Happy Fall Families!!! This week we all couldn’t wait until the first day of fall! We watched a video about fall and they were so excited to tell me all that they knew. This weekend if they would like to bring in a couple leaves to show others and decorate our room that would be great! During Student Success Skills, we have been studying about the 5 senses. On Wednesday the class got to try out our senses with tasting some simple kitchen ingredients (sugar, salt, lemon, and vanilla), smelling those same items, and touching. We also did a guess that sound activity and next week we will finish up with viewing some unusual plants. It was fun! We are wrapping up our shape unit and I am so proud of how much they know about 2D and 3D shapes. 😊 Thanks to our Mystery reader, Mrs. Wilcher (Rylan’s mom), the children loved all of her books! It has been so fun to see the students putting their letter sounds in action and reading and writing CVC words and reading decodable books. Woohoo!!!
This week the children began working on their own ipads from the county! They are trying hard to log in and find their way.

Hi families, Oh boy… some sicknesses have sure made their round in our classroom! I am hoping for a much healthier week (next week), for our little ones!! As a side note remember to email me your excuses for the absence and copy [email protected]
We welcomed Yesvanth to our class on Monday, we are happy he is in the Hive!
This week we learned about our senses through nonfiction texts as well as poetry. The children discussed ways they can help at home, school, and at recess. During Science they sorted many objects into categories depending on their properties. (wood, rubber, cloth, paper, plastic, metal) Just ask them!! In math they have worked on making new shapes or creations out of 2 or more shapes, and continued to practice making 3 D shapes with play dough. Mrs. Fisher, our counselor taught their monthly lesson this week.
I just need to say how awesome all of your children are, and how hard they work at their lessons and their behavior, and most of all on their kindness to others! You must all be so proud of them…I am!

Happy weekend families! This weather has been great! Somehow we have missed the rain during our recess each day so we were able to get our wiggles out. The children have worked hard on following the PBIS rules (1-5) and the BIG 3!! We focused on rule #5 which is to stay on task. This will need some more work but for the most part they are doing a really good job. 😊
This week we enjoyed our 1st Mystery Reader (parent), Mrs. Passerelli, Capri’s mom! The children loved to be read to and were a perfect audience. Thanks Mrs. Passerelli! Thanks to our room mom, Mrs. Allen (William’s mom), who has been behind the scenes getting things organized for our classroom. I also wanted to thank all of you who were able to make it to Curriculum night. I know it is a tough time of day. I had a couple questions I wanted to make sure I address, First is that we do not have homework at Dolvin, however we do encourage practice of the sight word cards each day and then to read with a family member. Second, as mentioned in my first newsletter, if you know of a planned upcoming absence, send an email to Mr. Stein, the assistant principal so he can review it and make a decision if it will be an excused absence.
The children continue to make new friends; learned how to find themselves on the map-(Earth, to country ( I mentioned continents), to state, to city to street, to house and then to their room; learned the cardinal directions North, South, East, and West; worked hard at naming flat (2D) shapes and their attributes; earning Bee Stripes and spikey ball PBIS points; finger spacing when writing; author/illustrator and front/back cover/title page; talking about things they can do at home and at school; and then about people they know-Our SEL lesson.

Hi Hive families, what a fantastic first week we had in Kindergarten!!! I have had fun getting to know your children…they are sweeties! Every week I will send a weekly update by email but I will also post it on my website under the newsletter tab.
This week we talked about all of our procedures and then our PBIS rules. We gather PBIS (positive behavior) points through bee stripes and “spikey balls” through great listening and getting compliments from me and other staff. Our goal is to earn weekly treasure chest and then monthly prizes from the PBIS prize cart. 😊
We practiced moving in our center groups, learned some funny songs, played “mirror” (just ask them about that game!), rolled the ball to our friends to learn their names, drank “jitter juice”, drew our letters right on the table with Expos (yep, we sure did!! 😊), made letters in sand, played with our Math manipulatives, shared some of our All About Me bags, danced to Go Noodle, went to our first assembly with Mr. Stein and Mrs. Shaffer to learn about our PBIS program, practiced saying our BIG 3 rules: Respect myself, Respect others, and Be 100% Accountable, practiced safety drills, learned about calendar Math; worked on writing our name with a capital letter and lower case letters, talking a little more to “Barney” the puppet, and lots more!!
Here is a look at next week:

Welcome to Kindergarten

Dear Parents,
Welcome to our class!! I am looking forward to an exciting year teaching your child. Through the years, I have taught First, Second, and Third grades. This is my 17th year at Dolvin and my 22nd year of teaching. I received my BS degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and my master’s degree from San Jose State University. I live in Alpharetta with my husband. We have three grown sons, that live in Atlanta, who attended Fulton County Schools. We also have a Grandson-Richmond (3), and a granddaughter-Sutton (17 mo) and a new granddaughter-Hannah (3 weeks old)!! 😊
Phone Numbers: You can reach the Dolvin office at 470-254-7020. The best way to reach me is by email at the above address. I usually check it first thing in the morning and after school. You may also leave a voicemail.
Absences: Please send a note as your child returns to school following an absence. If a note is not received, your child’s absence will be marked as unexcused. Attendance at school is essential for the learning development of your child and an important part of moving to the next grade level. Please have your child at school on time. All children should be in the classroom by 7:40.
**If you are planning an absence for a certain length of time, you will need to email Mr. Stein, our assistant principal, for approval ahead of time.
Dismissal: Please make sure your child knows how he or she is getting home each day. If your child is going home any way other than their usual way, please send in a note that morning. You can send in a note to me, email Lisa Carper, our data clerk, at Carper@fultonschools.org or call the school.
Lunch: Our lunch time will be 10:43-11:13. At this time no visitors are able to come to lunch for the first week of school. The office will send out information if/when parents may come for lunch. If your child brings lunch, please write his/her name on their lunchbox.
Water Bottles: Your child may bring in a water bottle each day. We would prefer one that has an easy open and close lid. Store-bought water bottles like Dasani are hard to open and often the lids are not put on correctly and they can spill. Please label.
Snack: We will have a snack break each day. Please send in a small healthy snack with your child in his/her backpack. Please do not send in drinks. (except the water bottle) Snacks should be nutritious and something that can be eaten in 5-10 minutes.
Communication Journal: The children will bring home a blue folder every day. Please take time to read any materials in this folder and remove any papers on the “Keep at Home” side. If there are papers in the “Return to School” side, please sign (if needed) and return them in the same pocket. This folder is the communication journal (CJ) that will be used to send home information and communications between home and school.
P.E.: We have P.E. on Wednesday and Friday. Please make sure your child is wearing appropriate shoes and clothing on these days.
Specials schedule: Monday-Music Tuesday-Science Discovery Lab/Media Center Wednesday-PE Thursday-Art Friday-PE
Birthdays: According to school rules, we will not be having birthday parties in the classroom. Student birthdays will be recognized in the morning announcements and in our room with a small prize. We also ask that you do not send in invitations or thank you notes to be passed out. Please mail or email them directly. (Treats for the whole class are not permitted to be brought in from home.)
Mystery Reader-Once the room parents are established, we will send out a sign-up genius for mystery reader times! The children love when their parents come in to read!!! Please remember to go to the Fulton County site to register as a school volunteer. It does not take long and it is required before you can volunteer at Dolvin.
***Please remember to go to the Fulton County site to register as a school volunteer. It does not take long and it is required before you can volunteer at Dolvin.
Science Discovery Lab-This is another great way to volunteer and spend time with the class as they have fun learning about Science.
Class Directory: Please fill out the directory form found at the end of this letter and send back to school if you want to be part of our class directory. This is totally optional but is nice to have if your little one wants to have a playdate with a classmate.
*****Name Tags: Please have your child wear the attached nametags the first and second days of school.
Please contact me whenever you have questions or concerns. Children benefit so much when both home and schoolwork together to help them learn and grow. 😊 I look forward to sharing this exciting and important year with you and your child!! Thanks for everything.
Warmly,
Jenny Petrina and Liz Nguyen 😊
PS: Please send in or email me a picture of your child! It can be one from this summer while they are having fun…any happy events.

We will test them on these words and provide him or her with the next list of 10 sight words. A sticker will be put on each list that your child has mastered. Thank you!”
Happy Labor Day and enjoy your long weekend!!!!! 😊

Reading: story elements (characters, setting, plot); rhyming, putting compound words together, listening for beginning and ending sounds in words (all oral skills); learning the sight words, I and can; retelling a story; counting out words in a sentence
Math: counting; identifying/writing numbers; ordering numbers
Writing: practicing left to right; looking at a sentence order
Social Studies: maps and globes
